A Brief History of Cappel’s
William Cappel began Cappel Display Company on August 11, 1945, trading his butcher shop to become a supplier of display fixtures for department and other retail stores. His brother Urban Cappel, who was a soldier at the time, joined William in the business when he got home from the war.
Because of its location near WLW-TV, customers occasionally stopped by after visiting one of the live local TV shows, such as Ruth Lyons 50-50 Club, The Paul Dixon Show and Bob Braun’s 50-50 Club. Over the years these customers and other downtown shoppers made frequent trips to Cappel’s, especially at Christmas time; and gradually the retail trade became a primary focus. Beginning in the early 1980’s, costumes were introduced into the product mix, at first on a seasonal basis. Today, Cappel’s has four retail locations, an inventory of 50,000 items, and many loyal customers; who return for the depth of our product line, and the lure of good price. We are thankful for the loyalty of our customers, and hope to continue to provide a great selection of costumes, costume accessories, party decorations, novelties, silk flowers, and many hard to find products.
Ray began working with his father, William Cappel, when he was still a young boy and has 50+ years experience in the retail industry. His wife, Stef completed a doctorate in education and later joined him in the family business.
In 1990, Ray and his cousin bought Cappel’s Display from their dads, at which time they officially changed the name to Cappel’s Inc. The cousins successfully adapted to the changing party needs of the community. Cappel’s continues to evolve in retail, wholesale, and internet commerce.
