How to Care for your Latex Mask
You’ve just bought the coolest, scariest, best political, or most realistic latex Halloween mask ever made and you want to keep it for years to come! Here are some tips to help make you mask last. Latex is a natural fiber that if not cared for properly will eventually dry out and rot. But, we have latex masks in our family that are many years old and still look brand new. My mom still has a latex clown mask she bought from Cappel’s nearly 40 years ago!
Some things to keep in mind: Whenever you’re not wearing your mask, keep it out of direct sun light. You might want to display your mask(s) and that is fine, even in a brightly lit room, as long as they are not hit by direct sunlight. If you prefer to pack them away from year to year, stuff them and store them in a box in a cool room that isn’t damp or humid.
But wait! There’s more! Before you display or store your mask take a damp sponge or damp paper towel and wipe the mask off and wipe it out to remove any sweat, oils, makeup or anything else that might be on the latex. Let the mask dry. Use a fat brush and some cornstarch and lightly brush inside the mask. This will wick all of the water up and keep the inside of the mask nice and dry. You can also wipe the outside of your mask with a damp cloth if it gets dirty and lightly wipe the hair and restyle it.
Put the mask on a Styro head or lightly stuff the inside of the mask with clean paper or cotton fiber cloth. This will help the mask keep its form. Slide a plastic bag loosely over the mask to keep dust away.
These steps should help you keep your mask looking new for years and years.
Happy Halloween!
